Our Lady of the Lake First in Baton Rouge to Be Recognized for Advanced Stroke Care
Did you know that cardiovascular disease and stroke is the leading cause of death in Louisiana?
Recently The Joint Commission, in conjunction with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, officially recognized Our Lady of the Lake with Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers.
This designation is the first of its kind in the Baton Rouge area and demonstrates excellent evidence-based quality care, patient safety and favorable outcomes for heart and stroke patients. This certification helps patients easily identify OLOL as one of quality that has surpassed numerous goals in the treatment of stroke.
Do you know the warning signs of a stroke? Being aware and getting immediate medical care can mean the difference between having a functional lifestyle and not being able to live independently. Learn more at ololrmc.com/stroke.

Could the Medicine Cabinet Add to Your Calorie Intake?
We know eating certain foods can affect weight gain, but what about the medications we take? Our Lady of the Lake Physician Group’s Dr. Bradley Meek recently talked with WAFB Channel 9's Phil Rainier about this issue. Learn about medicines that are in this category, including many steroids and antidepressants, if the issue is affecting you, and if so, how you can best address it.
Dr. Meek looks at other side effects medications can have besides slowing metabolism – chronic tiredness and mood changes, for example – and offers his patients alternative prescriptions, or “weight-neutral medications” to do the same thing as the original medicine, but without the risk of adding extra pounds.
He says, "I often counteract it with medicine that will decrease appetite and help with their metabolism."

Solving Mysteries and Saving Lives: Just Another Day at the Office
From the time he was a baby, Sean Mooneyham had frequent bouts of stomach problems that worsened with time. At age 3, he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease while his family was living out of state. Medication for Crohn’s didn’t seem to help Sean’s symptoms, puzzling his parents and doctors. When a job transfer sent the family to Jennings, Louisiana, the doctor seeing 5-year-old Sean referred he and his parents to OLOL Physician Group’s Brannan Alberty, a pediatric specialist at OLOL Children’s Hospital. With those decisions, some high-level detective work was set into motion that changed the family’s life forever.
Read how the Mooneyhams’ mystery was resolved in the latest issue of “Wee Believe” magazine. The issue contains other stories about the lifesaving care and unique comfort offered at OLOL Children’s Hospital.
