OLOL and Health System Recognized as a Top Performer

Our Lady of the Lake and its sister hospital facilities that comprise the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System (FMOLHS) were recently ranked in the top 20% of 321 health systems in Thomson Reuters’ list of the 100 Top Hospitals: 15 Top Health Systems. Systems on the list are recognized for publicly reporting quality data in core measures, length of stay and HCAHPS, mortality, complications, and other measures. For this recognition, FMOLHS is considered a medium size health system and is on the same list category with notable organizations such as Scripps, Spectrum and Lehigh Valley. Doctors at OLOL Among First in State to Remove Thyroid Tumors Without Visible Scar on Neck

Surgeons with the Head and Neck Center at Our Lady of the Lake are now offering transaxillary robotic thyroidectomy, or robotic assisted surgery, to remove tumors in the thyroid gland. This procedure requires the surgeon to undergo specialized training, and is only offered at a small number of facilities in the country and only one other hospital in the state. With traditional thyroid tumor surgery, patients would have a scar right over the throat in the front of the neck. With the robotic approach, the incision is made under the arm so there is no visible scar for the patient. Additional benefits include less pain in the neck area and a faster recovery.

"I believe the robotic approach offers a cosmetic advantage for the patient, but it also offers an opportunity to do a safe and precise operation ensuring that we preserve the vital nerves around the thyroid that are responsible for speech and swallowing," explained Rohan Walvekar, MD, Head and Neck Surgeon

Patients that have had previous neck surgery, a large thyroid gland that extends into the chest, or shoulder injuries may not good candidates for this procedure. Specialized training is required to complete the procedure. Each patient is different and recovery may vary from two days to two weeks. Excellence in Elderly Care Leads to Special Designation for Our Lady of the Lake

Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center was recognized for quality and commitment to ongoing care of the elderly. The NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Health System Elders) designation from The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University College of Nursing recognizes a higher level of care for elderly patients from nursing teams specifically trained to recognize and treat specific health conditions that affect the elderly.

“Through our participation in the NICHE program, which is the largest geriatric nursing program available, we are able to provide a best practice, team approach tailored to meet the individual needs of our elderly patients. This approach promotes positive experiences and leads to greater satisfaction rates for our patients and their families,” said Deborah Ford, Vice President of Patient Care Services.

Established in 1992, NICHE is the only national nursing geriatric initiative to improve the care of older hospitalized adults and is comprised of more than 300 hospitals throughout North America.
