Back to School, Back to Routines
It’s back-to-school for kids everywhere, creating new schedules and guidelines for students and parents alike. What are some ways you can help your children’s transition be smooth and painless?
Dr. Amber Denham of Pediatrics at Goodwood suggests getting kids on a school schedule sleep routine as quickly as possible. This helps early school mornings not seem so harsh. Also, Dr. Denham recommends checking kids’ backpacks to make sure children are not carrying more than 10 to 20 percent of their body weight. Some schools offer the option of rolling backpacks, which put less strain on children’s growing muscles.

Are You Ready?
We don’t want to think about it happening in our region - again - but hurricane season is in full force, so we need to be ready in case a storm threatens our area. Water, non-perishables and batteries are obvious necessities, but what else should be on your checklist? Visit Louisiana’s hurricane preparedness site for checklists, evacuation plan suggestions, and other tools that could save your life if disaster strikes. Be sure to plan for at least a three-day supply of medications and other medical supplies.
Along with necessary medications and a first aid kit, make sure you pack sentimental things that are most important to you. According to Our Lady of the Lake Vice President Coletta Barrett, RN, “Each person has to think about those personal items they would be devastated to lose. The wedding picture? Pictures of the kids? Grandma’s handkerchief? People can grieve the loss of personal property and that can cause stress and depression.Take your medical and emotional needs into account when making your evacuation plan.”
