U.S. News & World Report Ranks Our Lady of the Lake First in Baton Rouge Metro
On June 19, U.S. News & World Report ranked Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center as number one in the Baton Rouge Metro area. OLOL has also been listed as high-performing in the Ear, Nose and Throat Specialty. The U.S. News regional hospital rankings complement the national rankings by including hospitals with solid performance nearly at the level of nationally ranked institutions.
“These are hospitals we call ‘high performers.’ They are fully capable of giving most patients first-rate care, even if they have serious conditions or need demanding procedures,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor. “Almost every major metro area has at least one of these hospitals.”
U.S. News’ designation of high performance in the Ear, Nose and Throat specialty area means OLOL ranked in the top 25th percentile of all hospitals that were scored in the Ear, Nose and Throat specialty.
In addition, top doctors in each specialty are ranked based on peer nominations. Two physicians with Our Lady of the Lake Physician Group, Dr. Moises Arriaga and Dr. Daniel Nuss, are listed in the top 1% of doctors in the nation in the Ear, Nose and Throat specialty. Drs. Arriaga and Nuss are both faculty members of LSU Health Sciences in New Orleans, practicing physicians at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and part of the Our Lady of the Lake Graduate Medical Education Program.

Have Abnormal Heart Rhythms? Stay Close to Home for Advanced Treatment
Patients who suffer with abnormal heart rhythms called arrhythmias now have a state-of-the-art, closer-to-home option for surgery. The availability of atrial fibrillation (a-fib) ablation and the convergent procedure available locally at Our Lady of the Lake allows patients with a-fib the option of staying in the area instead of traveling out-of-state.
During an a-fib ablation, specially trained doctors called electrophysiologists use catheters to build an electrical roadmap of the heart, then destroy cells around the heart that are causing the abnormal heartbeat. OLOL uses the minimally invasive Sensei X Robotic Catheter System, by Hansen Medical, Inc. This sophisticated robotic platform integrates advanced levels of 3D catheter control with 3D visualization, providing greater accuracy and stability to the surgeon during a-fib ablations.
In a convergent procedure, an electrophysiologist and cardiothoracic surgeon combine the best of both traditional catheter and surgical ablation treatments using extreme heat to produce scar tissue on the heart to block abnormal electrical signals. The cardiothoracic surgeon ablates the outside of the heart through a single, small incision made in the patient’s abdomen, then the electrophysiologist threads a catheter through an artery in the groin to reach the inside of the heart to complete the ablation.
Arrhythmias, or electrical problems of the heart, affect five million people each year. When the electrical impulses that cause the heart muscle to contract are not transmitted normally, an arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat occurs. Arrhythmias can take place in a healthy heart and be of minimal consequence, but they may also indicate a serious problem and lead to heart disease, stroke or sudden cardiac death. If you have trouble with arrhythmias or a-fib, talk to your doctor about a-fib ablation or the convergent procedure.
