OLOL Awarded for Quality Service & Performance Excellence

Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center was named Hospital of the Year for the third time by the Louisiana State Nurses Association in the large hospital category. This award recognizes quality service in the nursing and healthcare industry. OLOL was also recently recognized for performance excellence for the second time with the Level III Louisiana Performance Excellence Award from the Louisiana Quality Foundation. Level III is the highest recognition. The statewide Louisiana Performance Excellence Award (LPEA) recognizes quality leadership in education, government, manufacturing, service industries, health care and non-profit organizations, with criteria based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Evaluations are based on proven effectiveness, sustainability, innovation, integrated processes and tracked results.

All four hospitals in the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System were recognized by the Louisiana Quality Foundation, a first for any Louisiana health system. In addition to Our Lady of the Lake, St. Elizabeth in Gonzales was recognized with the Level III Award; Our Lady of Lourdes in Lafayette and St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe both earned Level II designation.

Contribute To Good Health: Check on Your Colon!

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month—bringing attention to the type of cancer people are often too embarrassed to talk about. Colorectal cancer, or cancer of the colon or rectum, is the second leading cause of cancer death in Louisiana. This month, The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins is distributing free take-home kits, fecal immunochemical test (FIT), which detects blood in the stool. Colorectal cancer usually causes no symptoms in its early stages, making screening vitally important. If you are seeing bright red blood with your bowel movements, you should go directly to your doctor. The take-home kit, which must be picked up by the user, is not a substitute for a colonoscopy, but is one form of colorectal cancer screening. The best method for colorectal cancer screening is through colonoscopy.

The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins has developed a resource specifically for the disease. The site contains a colorectal cancer risk assessment tool to help determine one’s personal risk for colorectal cancer and provides information on the signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer. Free upcoming screenings are also detailed. For more info on free cancer screenings, call (225) 215-1234.
