At Your Service: New Dining Options for Our Patients

When patients are most comfortable, they often heal quicker and are able to return home sooner. Now, Our Lady of the Lake is offering an upscale element of comfort with At Your Request Room Dining Service. This new way to order meals is a unique dining experience for hospital patients, and is similar to a classic hotel style room service. Requested meals are checked to confirm compliance with any special dietary orders. Patients' family members and guests are able to purchase meals from the same menu. Meals are delivered within 45 minutes.

Healthy Living in 2011

Are you finding it hard to maintain your new year's resolutions now that we're into January? Our Lady of the Lake Physician Group's Dr. Curtis Chastain sees the negative effects obesity can have on overall health, and offers some tips on how to maintain healthy eating and exercise habits:

  • Eat more vegetables and fruits. Fruits and vegetables are cheap! Be creative. Put a small dab of peanut butter on apples or celery. Eat as a snack, and share with the kids.
  • Stay active. It burns calories, and every bit of physical activity counts toward weight loss. Walk 40 minutes, four days per week.
  • Compensate. Minimize calories by using foods with low sugar content. Become a label reader. More than 10 grams of sugar - don't eat it.
  • Do not skip meals - especially breakfast. Skipping meals leads to snacking and overeating as a response to hunger.
  • Eat frequently. Frequent low-calorie meals throughout the day can be your best friends. Eating something nutritious every two hours will help you stay ahead of hunger.
  • Involve family. It's easier when you have a support system in place and everyone in the family is making the same healthy choices.

One way to "buddy up" with healthy choices is to keep track of WAFB's nine Shape Up Showdown contestants. This program is sponsored by Our Lady of Lake Physician Group and helps area residents lead healthier lives. Hear how we helped Bob on his Shape Up Showdown journey in 2010.

When It Comes To Your Heart, Know The Signs

Remember, heart attack symptoms can be different in women than they are in men. Studies have shown these heart attack symptoms are at least 4 times more likely to be reported by women:

  • Throat discomfort
  • Pressing on the chest
  • Vomiting

These symptoms are more likely to be reported by men:

  • Indigestion
  • Discomfort
  • Dull ache
  • Right-side chest discomfort

Both men and women also experience these same well-known warning signs:

  • Fatigue
  • Crushing, squeezing, or burning pain, pressure, or fullness in center of chest - Pain may radiate to the neck, one or both arms, the shoulders, or the jaw. Chest discomfort lasts more than a few minutes or leave and return.
  • Shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, chills, sweating, or weak pulse
  • Cold and clammy skin, gray pallor, or a severe appearance of illness
  • Fainting (rare)

Be aware of all symptoms so you can act immediately to get medical help. See more information from Our Lady of the Lake's Heart Center. OLOL has the only cycle 3 accredited chest pain center in the area.
