Advanced Robotics Offer Head & Neck Surgery Patients New Hope

Our Lady of the Lake Otolaryngologist Dr. Rohan Walvekar is the only doctor in the state performing robotic assisted surgery to remove cancerous or benign tumors on the base of the tongue, tonsil, and oral cavity. The procedure is called Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS), and in some cases has reduced the need for feeding or breathing tubes, chemotherapy, and radiation.

TORS is an option for early and intermediate stage oropharyngeal cancers, the removal of benign tumors of the oral cavity and voice box - specifically on patients with sleep apnea - and some adult tonsillectomies.

Hear one of Dr. Walvekar's patients tell about his experience with the daVinci® surgical system and TORS.

Are Head Lice Keeping You Up At Night?

Head lice are a common - though unattractive - part of childhood, school sicknesses, and even winter. Our Lady of the Lake Physician Group's Dr. Michelle Flechas offers some tips about how to work through lice, including using gels and not shampooing hair every day, since lice are attracted to squeaky clean hair. Watch Dr. Flechas' recent interview with WAFB, Channel 9 to learn more about how to lower the itch risk in your house.

ATVs: One Size Does NOT Fit All

If Santa is planning to bring an ATV to your house this Christmas, be sure to remind him that one size does not fit all. In recent years, ATVs have gained popularity among children, but in turn, the number of ATV-related accidents has increased. In 2008, more than half of ATV-related injuries treated at Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital were in children younger than 16.

Since accidental child injuries are the number one killer of children under the age of 14, Our Lady of the Lake has partnered with Kohl's department store and the Safety Council of Louisiana in a grant aimed at reducing the risk factor and amount of ATV-related injuries. Children younger than 16 should only operate age appropriate youth model ATVs and children under age 6 should not operate ATVs at all. If you do purchase an ATV, statistics point to the importance of buying ATVs that fit the child's current age and not purchasing with the intent that your child will "grow into" the ATV. Helmets and other appropriate safety gear are always highly encouraged for all ages. Read more about our findings and suggestions for these purchases.
