Enhanced Surgical Experience
Our Lady of the Lake recently completed an expansion of our surgery area to enhance the experience for patients and their families. Patients are greeted at the St. Mary’s Admissions desk located on the second floor at the top of the escalators. Patients are then escorted to a private area where they can wait comfortably both before surgery and while in recovery. Recognizing the importance of emotional and spiritual support, these bays include a sitting area where family members are welcome to remain with the patient.
Children are also special guests when coming to Our Lady of the Lake for surgery. These younger patients and their families experience the same best in class space design and care in an area dedicated just for kids.

Surgical Advances to Treat and Prevent Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer –the cancer no one wants to talk about. And this diagnosis may mean surgery. A traditional surgical approach requires a large incision in the abdomen and possibly longer recovery time. For some patients, there may be an option for a minimally invasive procedure called TEM or transanal endoscopic microsurgery.
TEM is for patients with polyps or lesions that cannot be removed with a colonoscopy or for patients with an early stage colorectal cancer. The procedure is incision free which means patients a faster recovery. After transanal endoscopic microsurgery, patients typically stay in the hospital for one night, experience very little pain and are able to return to work and other normal activities in a short amount of time. Our Lady of the Lake is the only hospital in the area offering this advanced surgical approach.
Coming in September, The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins is offering free prostate cancer screenings. Check www.ololrmc.com for dates and times.
Our Lady of the Lake is ready for hurricane season. Are you?
Our Lady of the Lake recently completed the installation of five natural gas generators. These new generators are in addition to the diesel fuel generator already in place to support essential, life-support equipment such as defibrillators, ventilators, and fire alarm systems. The five new generators will provide additional power for the hospital and medical office buildings.
Just like you, Our Lady of the Lake has a disaster preparedness checklist. For example, before the beginning of every hurricane season we conduct inventory of our supplies, test systems and update staffing plans. These are all steps we take to make sure you have access to critical medical care in the event of an emergency.
